PROGRAMS:

 

CLASSROOM VISITS: Speaks to grades K-5 about her work as an author and artist. Also does comedy-storytelling presentations. Can also focus presentations on specific historical time periods upon request. Willing to work with teachers on programs tailored to fit class needs.

 

HOW A BOOK IS MADE: This workshop is all about designing a 32-page or 40-page illustrated book, from originating characters and settings, costumes, architecture, and layouts in dummy, to executing the color finishes. These is also a discussion of how the book is printed, marketed, distributed and what the author can or might do to help the book sell well.

 

WRITING A PICTURE BOOK: This is a workshop all about writing, revising, editing, building drama, tension, "show-don't-tell", what to write and what to expect the artist to illustrate. The author's background and interests are discussed, as well as how she uses these to create books.

 

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP: This workshop can be adapted for almost any age group, from elementary to high school to college level. It is geared to inspire writers, whether in fiction or non-fiction, to write what matters while at the same time learning useful tools, such as self-editing, marketing, publishing information and marketing your work. Students of all ages will be directed towards great places to send work, for fun and/or profit.

 

ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP: This is a workshop designed to show artists how to design a book dummy, to develop characters and pace a book through to the end, as well as work on color finishes. Depending on how much time is allotted to this workshop, progress can go from quick overview to actually completing a project. For kids: illustrating your own books.

 

TEACHER IN-SERVICE PROGRAMS: Workshops on 1) how to make mummy masks and mummy boards in three-D, 2) how to write in cuneiform and make your own law tablets, 3) Egyptian hieroglyphic workshops, writing your own name, a curse, a spell, etc. Teachers can take the information back to their students or student teachers. This workshop offers a new way of handling art, art history and ancient culture.

 

ART HISTORY/MUSEUM STUDIES/HISTORY CLASSES: Participants learn to recreate fresco painting, Pompeiian, Greek, Roman, Minoan, Mission walls, Renaissance frescos (painting part of a wall from the Vatican , for example). They'll also learn how to build small pyramids and architectural settings from various countries.

 

TIDBITS: Also offers workshops geared to particular subjects requested by different groups, such as, How to Use Picture Books in the Classroom, Picture Books and Social Studies, Deborah Nourse Lattimore (An Autobiographical Talk), and writing and/or illustration directly linked to course work of your own choice. Also translates Egyptian Hieroglyphics and offers ancient Egyptian workshops in writing, history, myths and more.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: Since she draws on an easel during most presentations, she donates all pad sketches to the school or organization..

 

GROUP SIZE PREFERENCE: Prefers small audiences (under 50) but is willing to speak to large groups of students or adults and will do assemblies.

 

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: If she's speaking to a large group, she would need a microphone. Other equipment may vary depending on the presentation. Colored markers, pens, and large pad on an easel for drawing in front of groups may be needed. If students participate, pads, pens, colored markers, and pencils may be needed.

 

NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS PER DAY: Prefers to do three to four 45 minutes talks, and then hold a Question and Answer session.

 

HONORARIUM: This should be presented to her at the end of the last session on the last day of the visit.  Generally speaking, her honorarium is $1,200 (for 3 presentations) to $1,600 (for 4 presentations) a day, plus expenses. This may be negotiable, depending on needs, location, and other factors.

The honorarium listed is the per-day honorarium (you would also be responsible for their travel expenses, hotel and meals). Sometimes, the fee may be negotiable depending on where you're located in relation to where she lives.
