Patrick
O'Brien is the author and illustrator of several non-fiction books
for children. His books cover many historic and prehistoric subjects,
from giant dinosaurs and ancient sharks to knights in armor and
pirates on the high seas, offering details from history that are
clear, accessible and rarely found in other texts for children.
A
solid non-fiction writer and illustrator, Pat also has a light-hearted
side, which can be seen in his illustrations for Captain Raptor
and the Moon Mystery, which was written by his good friend,
Kevin O'Malley. This science fiction book was Patrick's first
foray into fiction and features rocket ships, mysteries, and dinosaurs
in space that borrows elements from comic books and old-fashioned
serials like Buck Rogers.
Patrick
earned a degree in biology from the University of Virginia in
1982 and then went to art school at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Since 1986, he has been a freelance illustrator, working for clients
such as National Geographic, Newsweek magazine, The
Discovery Channel, The Smithsonian, and The American Museum of
Natural History. His artwork has appeared in magazines, newspapers,
greeting cards, on posters, videocassette boxes, and even on billboards.
In
1998, he began writing and illustrating children's books with
The Making of a Knight and Gigantic! Since
then he has created several more books, including The Mutiny
on the Bounty, which was selected as a 2008 IRA Teacher's
Choice. More books written and illustrated by Patrick are planned.
Some
of Patrick's artwork is included in the collection of the Mazza
Museum, a museum in Findlay, Ohio dedicated to art from children's
books. His artwork is also available for sale in several galleries
around the country.
Patrick
lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his wife, Allison, and his son,
Alex.
