DOROTHY DONOHUE

Illustrator & Writer

BIOGRAPHY I BOOKS I PRESENTATIONS I BOOK ORDERING

Dorothy Donohue looks forward to meeting and interacting with the children for whom she illustrates and writes her books.

Dorothy Donohue can do three (3) or four (4) presentations per day, depending on the needs and budget of the school. She prefers to work with groups no larger than 120 children.

The following is a sample of her presentations:

1) She has a slide presentation showing the process of creating a picture book, from sketches to finished artwork; including personal stories and animal "friends" that have inspired her work.

2) She gives a reading from one of her books while showing slides of the illustrations that accompany the text.

3) The children and Dorothy will work together to create a character from cut paper. They will design the setting, clothes, and props, just as she does when she's working on a book. She will finish with a question and answer time.

A cafeteria or library setting is desirable.

In preparation for her visit, Dorothy Donohue recommends that teachers remember how important it is for them to familiarize the children with her books prior to her visit. The more that the children have been exposed to her books, the more exciting and rewarding her presentation will be for them. A great way to prepare for her visit would be to read the books, discuss the stories, and possibly have the children write and illustrate their own stories.

On the day of the visit, Dorothy will need:

  • A screen to show slides in a room that can be darkened.
  • A table for her books and artwork.
  • An easel for her demonstration

Her honorarium is due on the last day after her last presentation.  Her fee structure is as follows:

$1,000 a day, plus expenses (4 sessions outside Colorado)

$   900 a day, plus expenses (3 sessions outside Colorado)

$   800 a day, plus expenses (4 sessions at a school within Colorado)

$   700 a day, plus expenses (3 sessions at a school within Colorado)
