JAN SPIVEY GILCHRIST'S APPEARANCES

Presentations:

Each presentation lasts 45 minutes, and Ms. Gilchrist can tailor her talk to fit your needs. If you'd like her to do a slide show, you should provide the slide projector, screen, a dark room, a carousel. If you'd like her to draw while she talks, please provide large sketching paper, markers, pens, and pencils. If she's going to be speaking to over 75 people, please provide a mike. Ms. Gilchrist can do up to, but no more than, 3 presentations per day, plus autographing.

HONORARIUM: $2,000 a day, plus expenses. May be negotiable, depending on circumstances.

Workshops:

If you'd like her to teach drawing, it would be helpful if the children were provided with paper, markers, pens and pencils. If you'd like her to do a writer's workshop, please provide the students with writing materials. Workshops basically take all day (at least 3 hours) and involve teaching writing (or drawing) techniques, having the students write their own stories (or illustate them if it's a drawing workshop). She does no more than 2 workshops per day. She can work with a maximum of 30 students per workshop. For workshops, she works with students in grades 3-12. Workshops for adults are also available. Workshops generally cost a bit more than presentations:

HONORARIUM: $2,500 for one workshop within one day; or

$3,575 for two workshops within one day,

                        plus expenses.

Author in Residence programs:

Jan Spivey Gilchrist has an MFA in Writing, a PhD in English, and is a former Reading Specialist for the Cambridge School Department. She is available for Author in Residence programs and uses art to teach literacy. Length of residency can be as long as needed.

HONORARIUM: $6,000 per week, plus expenses.

Local Author Visits in the Chicago area:

Jan Spivey Gilchrist will give one talk (one hour long), plus autographing for half an hour for $1,250 plus mileage. If workshops are required, please see above information under the Workshops heading.

Autographing:

Like most authors and artists, Ms. Gilchrist is happy to autograph books. But she personalizes the books in a very special way --- within a two minute time frame, she draws a portrait of the person asking for the autograph. Feel free to ask Ms. Gilchrist to do this for your students, teachers, librarians, and for yourself!

Age Range:

Grades K-12, and adults for presentations.

Grades 3-12 and adults for workshops.

Grades K-12 for author in residence programs.

Honorarium and Expenses:

Please see above for her range of honorariums for presentations, workshops, and author in residence programs. In addition to the honorarium, the hosting organization is responsible for her expenses (travel to and from her home in Chicago, hotel, and meals).  Please note that, for health reasons, Jan Spivey Gilchrist will need a direct flights whenever possible. Her honorarium is due following the last presentation or session on the last day.
