DESCRIPTION
OF PRESENTATIONS: Along with her reading of the book, Karate
Hour, Carol likes to invite local students of karate or other
martial arts to demonstrate their skills.
She will bring and share other illustrated and
unpublished manuscripts, along with hands-on props for the younger
children. The audience is encouraged to sing along, as some of her
work is set to familiar tunes, so everyone can chime in on the chorus.
NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS PER DAY: She does 4 presentations
a day of approximately 45 minutes to an hour in length, depending
on the age of the audience. Longer writing workshops are available
for middle school age groups. Two twenty minute visits can be arranged
instead for pre-K and K and possibly first grade audiences as well.
PREFERRED AGE RANGE AND MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CHILDREN
PER SESSION: Carol is comfortable with pre-school through
middle school children, with elementary being the optimum range.
Presentations are most comfortable in groups of no more than 60,
(three classes of 20 students, combined), but she is flexible, and
can speak to larger groups if the projection equipment is available,
as this would allow everyone to see the book and hear her voice.
Small groups are wonderful, and the classroom or media center setting
is the best.
CONFERENCES: Carol welcomes the opportunity to
encourage other teachers and writers to pursue their book ideas
and will gladly share the process and industry expectations from
her perspective.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS (for both school visits and adult
presentations): She will need a cordless mike and Elmo for large
groups in order to be able to project the art onto a large screen.
She may use an overhead projector for writing workshops. It
is always helpful to have a table and chair or lectern and shelf.
HONORARIUM:
$500 a day, plus expenses (travel, hotel, meals).

Recently
Carol Nevius visited our school sharing her book, Karate Hour
, and her experiences as an author. This was a delightful event
for everyone involved. Of course, Karate Hour is a captivating
selection for the elementary age students because of the beautiful
artwork and the text which simply and beautifully tells what it
feels like to take part in martial arts. However, the students were
quite fascinated with the writing and publishing process. Ms. Nevius
shared some pre-published writing with the students spawning more
questions about being an author. We saw the children light up with
enthusiasm hearing each of their inquiries treated with a thoughtful
reply. It was apparent that she really understands children and
respects their ideas. Milford Elementary can't wait for Ms. Nevius's
next book and perhaps another inspiring author visit day. Many Milford
teachers will use Karate Hour as a tool for teaching reading
and listening comprehension.

In
October '04, the Walker School was fortunate to host Ms. Nevius
as a visiting author for our lower and middle schools. For our sixth
grade, she discussed the writing process and the steps involved
in publishing a book. She read from Karate Hour while
two students demonstrated the karate positions. It was very entertaining
and informative. For grades 1-5, the karate students again helped
her with the demonstrations, and the children were very enthusiastic
about her presentation. I would highly recommend Carol Nevius for
any school visits involving elementary and middle grade kids. She
geared her presentations for each of the various age groups and
kept them all interested and eager for more.
