Shreeve's Presentations
I
love talking to kids about bugs, books and reading!
My
school presentations are suited to grades K-4 (especially grades
1-3). I use kid-friendly, colorful images to engage the audience
and special voices when reading the various characters in the books.
I welcome questions and ideas at the end.
For
younger children, I might ask, "What is a bug, and what do
bugs have to do with books?" We talk about the amazing world
of insects, how writers get ideas, what's important to stories,
and how Hector survives and thrives in his bug-eat-bug world.
For
older children, I might ask, "Who wants to be a writer? Who
likes to read?" I walk the students through the process of
conceiving, researching, composing, revising, and publishing a book,
giving them an inside glimpse of a writer's life.
I
have spoken to assemblies of up to 300 students and to classroom
groups as few as eight, so almost any size group is fine. Keep in
mind that smaller groups will receive more individualized attention.
If I know the details of the teachers' curriculum, I can tailor
my presentation to fit. I welcome letters from kids; please group
them by classroom and provide a return address so that I can respond
to the class.
I'm finding that I focus on the writing process a great deal in
my school visits.
For
assemblies and larger groups, I require an overhead projector, screen,
microphone, and a small table. For small groups, I use boards.
Presentations
require about 45 minutes, including questions. I will do up to three
(3) presentations in one day.
I
can easily visit more than one school in your area, and I will gladly
provide signatures.
Please
note that the honorarium is due at the end of the last presentation.
My honorarium is $500 plus expenses, but this may be negotiable
depending on my writing schedule, estimated book sales and if you
order from "Games People Play" -- see the book ordering
page for details. For further information, especially about
the expenses (travel, hotel, and meals), click the "Arrange
An Appearance" button and see "General Information on
the Cost of an Author Appearance" as well as the 'Honorariums'
section near the bottom of "How to Plan an Author Appearance."

"Elizabeth
Shreeve presented at our week-long book exhibit and did a fantastic
job. Her presentation was right on target...I couldn't have written
a better lesson plan myself. She talked about the writing process
and reading with just the right amount of personal background thrown
in. My favorite quote of hers was, 'Reading is like P.E. for the
brain...'"

"It
was fantastic for our students to hear from a “real” author many
of the things, especially the writing process and the power of research,
that our teachers say in their classrooms. I would also like to
personally thank you for creating books for our “transitional” readers
that are fun to read and have some soul, some depth!"
