SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS

In The Time of the Drums
The focus is on Kim's picture book (based on the Gullah legend of Ibo's Landing.)  She will talk about the history of this unique African American culture found only on the Sea Islands of the southern U.S.  Her presentation includes a showing of Brian Pinkney's award-winning illustrations accompanied by a reading of the book, and followed with vintage photographs of plantation life among enslaved people in the Sea Islands.

Described by audiences as "moving" and "spiritual," this is a program that works for any group size, and can be tailored for most age groups. (Powerpoint or slides.) Length of program: 45 minutes, plus Q&A.

Where Do Books Start?
Kim tackles this frequently asked question in a fun way.
For older audiences  (grades 3+), she discusses the process that takes a writer from idea to finished book, including research ideas, editing tips, and the other people involved in publishing a book.
For a younger audience  (grades 1-2), she talks about how an idea begins and grows into a story and will read one of her picture books.
For kindergarteners, she'll conduct a "build a story" game where students will help her imagine and tell a brand new story, or she can read her picture book, Dancing the Ring Shout! And if there's enough space she and the students can try their own circle dance at the end.

Length of program: 30-45 minutes, plus Q&A.

In Their Own Words...Slavery, Escape, Emancipation

In Their Own WordsÉThe Civil War

Through dramatic readings and Powerpoint or slide presentations, Kim shows audiences how original narratives, diaries, and letters bring the everyday voices of history to life and have influenced her writing. Grades 4-high school.

Length of program: 45 minutes plus Q&A.

WORKSHOPS/CONFERENCES/ETC.

The Publishing Track

A popular workshop for teachers that includes an in-depth look at getting published. What do editors look for? What are the most common mistakes beginners make? Do you need an agent? How do you market your work? Submission guidelines, contracts, expectations, outside references, and more. For serious writers, high school - adult.  Minimum of 1.5 hours.

The History/Fiction Connection

Using primary resources and creative writing techniques, Kim can show you how to make history come alive for students while teaching them to be better writers.  Take home materials, lesson plans, exercises that are easy to implement in your classroom. For writers who are interested in historical fiction, this workshop takes the hands-on approach in explaining how to take your writing to the next notch.  For serious writers, older elementary - adult.  Minimum 1.5 hours.

Soul Food:  Black History Through Good Books

This talk is specific for education professionals or those interested in history.  A fascinating mini-history course that effectively shows how black history can and should be integrated into American history, beginning with Columbus' voyage. An extensive bibliography of youth fiction and non-fiction books that showcases the African-American presence through every era of our country's history, as well as primary resources, images, and suggestions for classroom implementation. Minimum 1-1.5 hours.

WRITING WORKSHOPS AND WRITING CONFERENCES

Kim also speaks at writing conferences on topics that are appropriate for both the beginner and the professional writer.  General topics on the bones of writing novels or picture books and getting published, to more specific workshops on writing historical fiction and multicultural fiction, to the all important process of revision.  30-45 minute session, plus 15 minute Q&A.

KEYNOTES AND OTHER ENGAGEMENTS

Topics include:

Reading and Writing From the Landscape of Childhood
An Author's Role in Shaping Young Readers
Soul Food:  Black History As American History

Kim is always happy to develop topics of interest to your specific group.

AUDIENCE

Kim prefers an audience of 200 or fewer for large assemblies, 20-30 for workshops and conference breakout sessions.  Kindergarten visits always work best as gatherings of no more than one or two classrooms.  She can speak to a broad age range, from K to YA. Familiarity with the author's books always makes everything go more smoothly.

HONORARIUM AND NUMBERS OF SESSIONS PER DAY

Schools : $1,000 per day, plus reasonable travel expenses including airfare, transfers, meals, and hotel lodging. This is for 2 assemblies + 2 kindergarten or classroom visits. (By classroom visits, she means when the school groups the honor students or the better readers into one classroom setting so she can provide more one-on-one time with each student. The size of this class can be up to 35 or 40 students.) When three or more schools are booked out-of-state, Kim will do an evening PTA or public library visit for free.

$500 for a half-day, and this is only for visits booked within the metro Atlanta area or tie-in school visits (see more details below), and involves no more than 1assembly + 1 kindergarten or classroom visit.

Two of Kim's books will be signed and donated to participating schools.

Tie-in school visits: Schools with limited budgets often find it helpful to share an author with a neighboring school on a single full day. Kim is happy to accommodate. Strict timetables must be kept and may mean less or no Q&A time and/or autograph session.  The half-day fee is $500, plus expenses (shared with partner school.) This includes 1 assembly and 1 kindergarten or classroom visit at each school site. If each school requires three sessions, this might be worked out, but only if the schools are very close together, and only if the school is willing to accept shorter sessions and/or have their own powerpoint set-up already set up. Then, depending on the school's needs, she could do three shorter sessions and/or do presentations without A/V. It is expected that shared-days will be booked simultaneously and be coordinated by one of the partner schools acting on behalf of both. Partner schools should be no farther apart than a 10 minute drive.

Conferences/ workshops: 3 breakout sessions, or 1 keynote/large assembly and 1 breakout session, $1,500. Up to one additional session can be added for an additional fee.

The honorarium should be presented following the last presentation on the last day of the visit.
