THE TEXAS BOOK FESTIVAL

The Texas Book Festival sponsors author visits to low-income schools in Texas schools the Friday before the Festival (11/2/07 in 2007) and they give away 100-200 of the author's signed books to the kids to whom the author gives his or her presentations. There is a $500 honorarium for authors invited to participate. Any author who is invited to do the program, called Reading Rock Stars, also speaks on a panel or does a presentation in the children's village area of the Festival, where the Reading Tent is located, during the weekend of the Festival (Nov. 3-4 in 2007). The Texas Book Festival only considers authors who have books out in the current calendar year. And for the Reading Rock Stars program, they look for authors whose books don't appeal only to boys or only to girls, but to both genders. In 2006, they chose 10 authors for this event.
