CAROL THOMAS'S PRESENTATIONS
Joyce Carol
Thomas is available for school, library, and university visits,
as well as professional development workshops, professional conferences,
and seminar presentations.
SCHOOL
VISITS: Joyce prefers to visit schools that are arranged in conjunction
with a keynote talk at a conference, university, or other large
event.
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS: Using proven methods in helping students
use correct grammar while valuing their creativity, Joyce will help
you achieve higher literacy levels for your classes.
NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS PER DAY: Joyce can do up to, but no more
than, two sessions a day, plus one autographing session. If she
is to be asked to attend a reception or other events, this should
be discussed in advance of her accepting the engagement.
AGE RANGE: Joyce can speak to any age level, from young children
through to adults. Her books span preschool ages to young adult
and adult.
MAXIMUM
NUMBER OF PEOPLE PER SESSION: When speaking to students, Joyce
prefers to speak to no more than 60-80 students groups by age, preferably
in a library or classroom setting.
When
speaking to adults, she can speak to any size group. For large groups,
a microphone should be handy.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS: It's helpful to have a microphone available for
groups of 100 or more people.
HONORARIUM:
Joyce's honorarium ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 a day, plus expenses
(travel, hotel, meals). However, she will work within the budget
of the school or organization, so please contact Catherine Balkin
to discuss. Joyce will adjust her honorarium to meet the specific
needs of your budget.
For
further information, especially about the expenses (travel, hotel,
and meals), click the "Arrange An Appearance" button and
see "General Information on the Cost of an Author Appearance"
as well as the 'Honorariums' section near the bottom of "How
to Plan an Author Appearance."
EXPENSES:
Joyce prefers that the school or organization book both her hotel
and airline ticket (direct flights wherever possible). As she doesn't
drive, the hosting organization should provide a driver or car service.

*(During)
the tenth anniversary of the Foundation's New York City based Settlement
House-Author Residency program…readers of all ages at Stanley Isaacs
Neighborhood Center in New York City were visited by National Book
Award winning author Joyce Carol Thomas from May 22-25.
*Fathers,
mothers, and their children welcomed Joyce to the Stanley Isaacs
Neighborhood Center with a dinner held in her honor, which was followed
by a reading, a discussion, and art activity based on Joyce's book,
Gingerbread Days.
*Joyce
Carol Thomas came to Stanley Isaacs as a stranger, but left as a
friend.*
